One Song at a Time

In a world that is filled with great challenges and discord, music has the power to open hearts and minds to the idea of creating and accepting CHANGE. Continuing our fifth season, the 100-voice American Youth Chorus reminds the residents of our nation’s capital that young people have the ability to change the world through their music and make it a better and more harmonious place to live. It is not an easy task, but it can happen…ONE SONG AT A TIME!

American Youth Chorus is holding auditions for students ages 8 to 14 to join the chorus .

American Youth Chorus, the youth chorus of Congressional Chorus, has 100 young people from DC, Maryland, and Virginia. For more information about the chorus, visit AYC’s new website at congressionalchorus.org/ayc.

To schedule an audition time, please e-mail AYCManager@congressionalchorus.org or call (202) 399-7993, ext. 182. No experience is necessary and singers need not prepare a song in advance for the audition. The artistic director will run some scales and warm-ups with your child and have him or her sing something familiar such as “Happy Birthday.”

American Youth Chorus believes that all children, regardless of socio-economic background, deserve a high-quality music education. Tuition for our program is based on a sliding scale determined by household income and full scholarships are available.

In addition to concerts at the Atlas, past performances have taken place at the White House, Kennedy Center, the U.S. Capitol Building, the Children’s Inaugural Ball, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival with the Welsh National Opera, and the State Department for the Kennedy Center Honorees luncheon.

It was the “best evening of my twelve-year old life!” 

These are just some impressions by members of the Senior Division of American Youth Chorus (age 11 to 14) when they sang for over an hour at a holiday reception at the White House late last year.

After the students performed, they were given a private tour. But what topped an already special evening was that to everyone’s surprise, our young people had the opportunity to meet First Lady Michelle Obama. Mrs. Obama was so gracious speaking for a few minutes and shaking every singer’s hand before posing for photos.

Kennedy Center Honorees
On Saturday evening, December 4th, the Senior Division had the privilege of singing in the grand foyer of the State Department to welcome the 2010 Kennedy Center Honorees and their guests to the official Honors Dinner hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Just a few of the legendary giants of the performing arts world who stopped at the end of the red carpet to listen included pop icons Dianna Ross and Sir Paul McCartney, whose entourage lingered for several minutes as the former Beatle stood and clapped along with our AYC members as they sang “This Is My Song.”

WHITE HOUSE PERFORMANCEThe Junior Division received an invitation from the White House to perform on the State Floor of the White House during their highly popular Holiday Open House tours. On December 8th, standing right outside the Blue Oval Room and accompanied by violin, flute and by the famous White House Steinway grand piano, the young AYC choristers serenaded the President and First Lady’s guests as they toured the most famous house in the world.
